Vegan takes the win at National Championships!

Multisport athlete Laura Kline has competed in the offroad US National Championships and taken a national title.

The duathlon race started with a 5 km trail run before moving to 30 km on the mountain bike and finishing with another 10 km of off-road running.

Laura’s time of 3:11:57 gave her the women’s 45-49 category and the Overall Female title.

“The bike course was challenging and kept you on your toes with a variety of terrain” Laura told Great Vegan Athletes. “This was my first time racing on my mountain bike and I really enjoyed the experience. The run courses looped around Lake Wedington which offered great views and an equally challenging mix of terrain. Both courses were what you would expect for a National Championship!”

Laura won by 8 minutes with third place a further five minutes behind.

“I had a very large gap after the first run but due to my novice Mountain Bike skills two of the females were right there with me. Luckily my running strength allowed me to finish strong.”

The latest victory comes around 17 years after turning vegan, which followed four years as a vegetarian. Laura described this as “the best decision I ever made”. She’s competed at the World Championships and has been age group world champion and overall world champion at different duathlon distances.

She has not had difficulty fuelling herself on races. “For training and racing I am using Unived (a vegan company) gels and drink mixes. I also have been using Vafels vegan Liège waffles on the bike.”

Laura seems to be never far from another fantastic race result so we look forward to bring more news on her successes soon!
