Vegan runner smashes New York Central Park record
Vegan runner Robbie Balenger has broken a world record after a 100 mile run in New York. He was aiming to beat the record for running loops of New York's Central Park during the 18 hours 50 minutes it's open.
Robbie smashed the previous record of eleven laps by running 16. He completed 100 miles in 18:07:44. As the loop had 5000 ft of height gain per loop, he’s also gained 80,000 ft (24,400 metres).
Robbie is also known for running across the US in 75 days – 3200 miles or nearly 43 per day.
“This is the most miles I’ve ever run in a single day” he said. “However, once I put forth this level of accountability, I have to see it through. My word is my bond.”
Robbie’s sponsors noted that the vegan has averaged close to a ten minute mile for a hundred mile. However, this doesn’t take into account rests, toilet breaks, eating or the elevation of the route.
“The physical and mental fortitude it took to not just complete but dominate this feat like Robbie did is beyond inspiring” cofounder Keith Nowack said. “And we couldn’t be prouder to have played a role in helping him smash his goal.”
Robbie has previously explained that “ethical reasons are now the strongest driver behind my veganism, alongside the environment. I still care about my health, but I care more about the future of this planet and the animals.
“The future generations that will be affected by the choices we make, and the animals who suffer horrendously for them, don’t get to make the choice for themselves. It is with those that don’t have a choice that my empathy lies.”
