Fiona Oakes flew to Russia to complete her fourth marathon of the eight she needs for her world record attempt.
The Siberian International Marathon is a prestigious race attracting quality runners from all over the world and this was reflected in the standard of the runners.
Fiona’s main objective was to promote her record attempt and veganism, and this was extremely successful with a news item and an invite to the press conference. She was also mentioned in the news section of the race website as she was invited to visit the Omsk dog shelter.
The run itself was in sunny 15 degree centigrade and a blistering pace was set by the high quality field. Both the men’s and women’s races were subject to close finishes and fast times, Fiona finished 15th in a very creditable time of 3.11.47.
Fiona was awarded a medal for her achievements.
Fiona said “Today was a massive success for the animals and veganism. I have NEVER received this kind of attention from the press, TV and public. I am so thrilled. So many animal people came to meet me at the Finish of the race and had made banners to cheer me and Percy (her mascot) on during it. As for the run, just a really easy 3:11, didn’t touch the sides and smiling all the way round. I have loads more press to do and we leave tomorrow.”
