World Champions!
Success continues for vegan figure skater and her partner Eric Radford as they take the greatest prize in their sport – Gold at the World Championships.
Going into the event the Canadians were widely expected to do well. Following a Bronze last year they have had numerous successes including another Canadian title in which they broke the points record.
The standard was good with four pairs breaking the 200 point barrier. The other three pairs were Chinese skaters undoubtedly benefitting from their home advantage. Meagan and Eric won the Short Program and the Long Programme to take Gold by over seven points, over 22.5 clear of the next skaters from outside China.
Their score was agreed to be technically excellent including side by side triple Lutzes and a quad throw Salchow. They are the only pair in the world who can perform both.
"This is a very personal victory. Every single victory along the way this season had a very special meaning," Meagan said. Other reporters noted that the usually talkative skater had been left speechless by the victory.
This is the first Canadian Gold in the event since 2001. The Canadian Olympic Team website devoted a page to the success which included a short video on Meagan which almost completely consisted of her veganism (link below).
This extends their unbeaten run following the Canadian victory and Golds in the Four Continents and Grand Prix events. We will of course be watching their progress and bringing you news as it comes.
