Vegan win in the IOM marathon
‘Queen of the Extreme’ runner Fiona Oakes followed her Saharan and North Pole adventures with a relatively mild marathon in the Isle of Man (UK). The pressure was off because it was just part of her attempt to complete a marathon on all continents plus the Arctic in a short period – the race time itself didn’t matter.
By accident Fiona found herself at the front after one of the two laps. “I certainly wasn't pushing hard. It was only when I came back through the Start for the second half of the race (2 lap course) that my Mum shouted to me to slow down as I was leading. At that point I had no idea where I was in the race or anything like that.” She then decided it would be a good chance to push for a victory and a championship qualifying time for London.
The course was described as ‘undulating but was actually quite hilly with “a real monster of a hill at mile 4 and 17”. At 20 miles someone called out the time and Fiona realised if she pushed on she would make sub 3.15. This qualifies for a London Marathon automatic qualifying for a Championship spot until 2015. It would also be great to get another vegan win!
She finished strongly in 3 hrs 12, about ten minutes ahead of the next woman.
This is just part of Fiona’s attempt to get into the record books by running a marathon in all areas, and she needs support.
