Vegan runner takes Silver at World Age Group Marathon Championships
Veteran runner Joe Camilleri has taken a medal at the Age Category World Championships.
The race was part of the Chicago Marathon. The 73 year old Maltese/Canadian took third in the race and Silver in the World Championships out of 171 runners in the 70-74 age category.
Joe finished in 3:28:58, running under 8 mins/mile (under 5 mins/km).
Joe Crazy Legs as he is known, was super thrilled to have met the new Marathon World Champion, Kelvin Kiptum at the Awards Night held on the same day. He found the atmosphere at the Chicago Marathon was electric, with 47,000 taking part.
No rest!
In 2024, besides getting ready for the Vancouver Marathon, where he has already won the race twice, he is doing the Berlin Marathon, when he will be 74 years old.
One of Joe’s favourite quotes, is “You are never too old to chase your dreams and goals.”
Joe turned vegan before his first marathon in 2017, initially for health reasons.
“Since then, it has become more than a personal choice, but, more so, for the welfare of all animals, not just pets” he says. “I will never again eat any animals or animal products. If anyone is in doubt about my diet, all they have to do is to look at my running statistics. I have gone faster, the older I got!”
