Vegan Lifter breaks more records at the World Championships
Belgian Sahyuri Lalime and Britain’s Sophia Ellis were both returning lifters who showed their capabilities as records fell.
Sahy notched up a squat world record at the European Championships this year and continued with some more amazing lifts. She passed her 40th birthday last year, so is an M1 veteran although she competed in the Open category at 63 kg.
Incredibly she managed to pick up seven records at national levels, two European and again she broke a world record – her own.
Her squat of 185kgs added 2.5kgs, to her own record, qualifying as a new national, European and World record in the M1 class!
Incredibly Sahy had never had a bench record before but that was soon rectified as her 97.5 kg lift was a 5 kg personal best and an M1 national record.
In Deadlift she managed 202.5 kg, which was a 2.5 kg improvement and broke national records at both Open and M1.
The total of 485 kg was a 10 kg improvement and also broke the European record both for M1 veterans and in the Open category.
Sahy’s reflections however are that this is not the pinnacle.
“I had some heavy ambitions, but unfortunately once again fell short. Nevertheless, this was actually a pretty good meet, even in some ways my best ever performance.”
She also revealed her next goal, which is an ambitious one.
“I’m still 15kgs short of the M1 World Total Record, but I will close that gap.”
Sahy has been veggie since 2003 and vegan since 2015. She eats a lot of oats, bananas, peanut butter, blueberries, tofu, rice, broccoli, cucumber and kale. “I also eat lots of protein smoothies, kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas, black beans, tempeh, seitan, quinoa, bulgur and seasonal fruit and veggies. I keep frozen veggies on hand for quick meals. Right now, as it’s winter, I’m making a lot of lentil and split pea veggie soups!”
Britain’s Champion Sophia Ellis
Sophia Ellis also returned to the Championships. The multiple British Champion has competed several times before and has a great collection of records.
Competing in the 76 kg category she left with a 175 kg squat, 127.5 kg bench and a 230 kg deadlift. The bench was a personal best from her already impressive levels.
Sophia turned vegan in 2011 around the time she started lifting.
“I didn’t need to eat or use animal products to survive, so why put animals through unnecessary suffering? It just didn’t sit right with me that we are causing so much damage to the environment and the animals just for our own convenience.
“Once I made the switch, I found that my body really thrived off it! I also became more conscious of what I was putting into my body and how small changes in my lifestyle could have a big impact.”
