Triple challenge for vegan Vlad
Vlad returned to the challenges of the Translantau 50k race which he included as part of his training regime.
The course covers large parts of Lantau Island off the Hong Kong mainland, peaking at 854 metres and including 2300 metres of height gain.
“The race was more of a training session and my long run for the week” Vlad told us soon afterwards. “I covered over 150km during that week. For the past 6 weeks I have been running over 150km a week in preparation for Transvulcania in May.”
Vlad completed the race in under five hours, coming in at 4 hours 57 minutes and 53 seconds, a full quarter hour in front of the second placed runner and half an hour in front of third. As well as the win, this also gave Vlad the course record.
Typical of the hard working Australian, Vlad felt that he had not pushed his limits and was able to continue with training next day.
Two
Vlad also recorded a win over what is a relatively short run for him. The 13k Bonaqua Lifeproof Action Sprint included 800m of height gain so was well suited to Vlad, who copes excellently with hills.
His win out of 300 competitors was in 1:18:42, close to five minutes ahead of his nearest rival. This was also a record time for the course. Again, the irrepressible vegan continued with his training soon after – taking another training run later that day!
Three
Shortly after that he entered the hilly 21km Hysan run. This provided his third win and third course record, winning by over five minutes in just over 1 hour 44 minutes.
We’ll be keeping in touch win Vlad as he prepares for his trip to Europe for Transvulcania, and keeping you updated.
Stop Press – Four!
Shortly after publishing this article we learned that Vlad had won the Salomon To The Top Of Hong Kong race. The 21km (half marathon) race started at sea level and peaked at over 900 metres. Vlad finished in 2:39:35, over 19 minutes ahead of the second placed runner and again taking the course record.
