Series win for Pumpelly
Now Spencer and racing partner Nick Galante have completed an excellent season in the Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge where they have secured the title.
The challenge is a touring car series now running for 13 years. Run by the International Motor Sports Series it includes a series of ten 150 minute races with two categories of car. Spencer and Nick compete in the Street Tuner (ST) class which is for cars with 4-6 cylinders classed as sedans, hatchbacks, coupes or convertibles. Thirty-one teams took part.
Solid performances including wins in the 4th and seventh races left Spencer in second place going into the final race. At this point they knew that even if they won, their rivals in car 25 could beat them by finishing fourth or better.
They qualified in 11th, which Spencer felt gave them a big challenge. “I remember thinking, when we were trying to get through 11 cars to get to the lead that there wasn’t enough time left in the race,” Pumpelly recalled. “Then, when the No. 25 dropped out it was the opposite: the last 25 minutes took forever!”
Spencer drove their Porsche Cayman to victory with a comfortable 11 second lead over second place. “I didn’t realize it was going to be so big of a deal until it actually happened,” he was quoted as saying. “To see how excited everyone was and the feeling of accomplishment and hard work they’d put in over the last two years and over my career, it really is a big deal. It keeps me excited about next year.”
