Five star strength earns national title and record!
Vegan powerlifter Sophia Ellis has taken another British title to become five times national champion
Sophia has taken three months off due to a knee injury and knew that would affect her squat as she competed in the ~76 g raw category.
She opened with a decent squat (170 kg), and the bench was a monster 125.5 kg, breaking her own national record. She then pulled a 237.5 kg deadlift to take the win.
“Nowhere near my best or what I’m capable of, but I knew going into this that I’d be taking a hit on squats in order to keep myself in one piece” she said afterwards. “I’m genuinely so happy with my performance after all that I’ve dealt with and most importantly, enjoyed the competition.”
Sophia has been vegan since 2011.
“To start with, it was due to health reasons…But the more I looked into veganism, the more my eyes opened to the ethical and environmental side of this lifestyle.”
“I didn’t need to eat or use animal products to survive, so why put animals through unnecessary suffering?”
