Continental title won by vegan triathlete
The sprint distance created a race under pressure for the Oz-based vegan.
Charm McShane was one of the multisport elite vying for a continental title at the Oceania Triathlon. This shorter triathlon has a 750 m swim, 20 km cycle and 5 km run.
Last time’s winner returned as the favourite, and the previous 2nd and third placed runners helped make it a challenging field.
In a tightly contested race, Charm squeezed out a win to become Oceania champion.
“Anytime you have the chance to win a race it’s super nice” she says. “Being able to grab the tape and hold it up is special, so I definitely appreciate it a lot more than I might have done when I was a little bit younger.”
Charm is more known for her performances at the longer, standard distance triathlon. She’s been the U23 World Champion and two-time competitor at the Commonwealth Games. She’s also a long term vegan.
“I’ve been a vegan for a very long time and I believe it’s the right diet for me, it’s the right way of living for me, so if others are inspired than an athlete can be a vegan, I think that’s great.”
