Best ever finish for vegan athlete at Euro Champs
Lisa Gawthorne recorded her best ever finish at the European Duathlon Championships with 6th in her age group after a great race in Andalusia, Spain.
She’s competed at European and World level for several years now, and the recent run-bike-run event saw her stepping up a gear to beat her previous performances in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
“The race went amazingly well for me” Lisa told Great Vegan Athletes. “I had a strong first run and although I wasn’t riding in a pack on the bike leg which means you use more energy, I felt energised enough to power through solo style and go into the final run overtaking a fair few competitors. I even managed a sprint finish that took me to my best ever placing in sprint duathlon – 6th in Europe in my age group. “
Vegan powered
Lisa has been vegan since age 21 and is managing director of a vegan confectionery company. She’s also an accomplished vegan runner who has represented Great Britain.
Lisa managed to fuel up in Spain before the race.
“In Punta Umbria as it’s out of season there wasn’t a lot of choice re where to eat out but we had good choices in our hotel, with tofu, vegetables, rices, grains, pasta and salad a plenty. I also brought some almond milk over with me and some vegan protein bars.”
The great result proves Lisa to be a world class athlete and she will be proving this again in September as she competes in the World Championships in Holland.
“In between now and then, I will be doing a fair few 5K and 10K races to keep me sharp and looking forward to getting off the wattbike and out on the roads in the summer on the road bike“ she says.
