Mitchell is a defender with German soccer club Werder Bremen. By 2026 he had over 220 appearances in the Bundesliga with 19 goals.
- Hundreds of Bundesliga appearances
- Youth international
- Attacking defender with goals and assists
In his early years Mitchell played for Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, playing for the national under 16, 17, 18, 20 and 21 teams. In the 2011 under 17 World Cup, scouts noticed as he finished with three goals in six matches. He also headed the only goal in the 2017 UEFA European under 21 Championship final.
Mitchell had three seasons with Bayer Leverkusen where he played in the Europa League and Champions League. He then moved to Werden Bremen where in four seasons he’s played 91 times.
Mitchell has been vegan since 2017. He was playing for Hertha Berlin and made the change.
“I saw a few documentaries and then just tried it out. I’ve been able to sleep a lot better since then and recover better after matches. In general, I feel happier.”
One of these was ‘Dominion’ which covers factory farming, and Mitchell said “that was it.”
Mitchell recognises that it’s not always straightforward to eat vegan, but he sticks with it. He’s always loved couscous and used to eat it with meat; now he enjoys it with other foods. He snacks on chickpeas, and has the occasional vegan chocolate bar. He’s discovered a restaurant in Cologne which serves a vegan Magherita pizza which he describes as “incredible”.
“They use cashew mozzarella as a cheese substitute, it’s really awesome.”
Mitchell enjoys eating “almost everything”, although he tells our site “I do love Asian or Arabic food like couscous with vegetables and chickpeas.”
At 32 and recovering from an injury many are hoping to see Mitchell return to the form they have seen in him. He’s been known for flair and speed, playing at right back and right midfield, often showing flair as well as pace and playing his part on some strong attacking moves.
