Vegan takes world duathlon title

Vegan food entrepreneur Lisa Gawthorne is world Duathlon champion after a blistering race in Ibiza.

2 May 2023

The British vegan is still on cloud nine after taking the European title just six weeks ago. She now faced the world’s best in the run – bike – run event.

“It was a tough race from start to finish as it was 22° and muggy so everything felt tough” she said.

She ran 4.8 km trying to save some energy, while she retained the lead.

“Bike [18.6 km] was very tough – I was on my own for 4.5 miles in the wind…53% of the ride was in my max heart rate zone. “

“Final [2.8 km] run was just ok – 95% of this was in my max heart rate as the bike did it’s damage so just kept to a balanced pace without doing anything crazy.”

Lisa had no time to celebrate as she had an immediate drugs test, which of course was completed without incident.

Vegan powered

Lisa has been vegetarian since age 6 and vegan since age 21. She now competes in the 40-44 age category.  She has been competing at European level since 2017 and has represented Great Britain at Cross Country running too.  She’s a member of Vegan Runners UK and wears the club vest in a lot of events.

“I am a huge animal lover and that was originally my reason for going veggie at the young age of six…I made the connection that meat was actually of animal origin and felt it was wrong to carry on eating any meat for that reason.”

“I honestly did not expect this but I am really over the moon” Lisa says.

“Well done to everyone who raced today. There were some nasty accidents and safety should always be the priority. My age group was packed with many talented athletes – well done to you all – it’s a pleasure racing alongside you and all who raced today. Plus amazing supporters too.”
