Vegan Savate Maestro claims 13th medal
The British veteran added to his remarkable history in the sport with another solid performance.

James Southwood (pictured, centre) has won another Bronze to continue a fantastic participation in the martial art of Savate. The medal is his thirteenth at European or World Championships – and his eleventh from eleven appearances.
The British veteran has competed annually since 2005, excluding the 2020 Covid cancellation and a 2023 injury. The sport alternates annually between European and World Championships. In 2014 he was World Champion and he’s won a collection of medals. The latest comes as James approaches his 46th birthday. With one age category to compete in, James was prepared for opponents at any age from 18 upwards.
This year he overcame difficult opponents representing Finland and Hungary before losing to France. Savate combines boxing-style punching with kicks to create a sport which is great to watch and has gained popularity, especially in French-speaking nations.
This continues a run of eleven consecutive appearances at World and European Championships which have earned him a medal and gives him his 13th medal. This 20 year record in an energetic sport considered more suitable for young people is testament to James’ fitness.
James has given back to the sport he loves by coaching at the London club he founded. He’s also the current president of the Great Britain Savate Federation.
Raised vegetarian, James turned vegan aged 16, and says “the motivation was a simple wish to respect animal rights.” He now approaches 30 years vegan!
