Vegan bikes the World Championships
Vegan Mountain Biker Frans Claes followed up his strong performance in the Belgian nationals with a determined race in the World Championships.
“It feels amazing” Frans said afterwards. “It’s my 10th participation in a World Championship and finally everything comes together. I’m so super happy to end this strange season with the result I waited so long for.”
Frans biked 110 km over a course in Turkey, with over 3000 metres of height gain. This was including some extreme 25% hills, with little time for recovery. Secretly he was hoping for a top ten finish.
“The WC is always a fast race and I tried to stay as long as possible with the front group. Over halfway I tried to play it smart and got away in a solo break away. It didn’t last for long as the 7 best riders chased me down again after a few kilometers. Towards the end I was struggling with dehydration and had to dig deep to finish inside the top10.”
Frans was delighted with his eighth place.
Frans also celebrated more success with his girlfriend completing her 10th World Championship with a bronze medal in the women’s race.
The race caps a tricky season disrupted by COVID-19 and it’s fantastic to see Frans end on a high.
