Skate Canada Gold #6!
Vegan Meagan Duhamel and her partner Eric Radford have had an incredible last few years with two World Titles and continuing domestic honours. Now the pair have announced their retirement, meaning that their current season is their last.
Entering their final Skate Canada they had an incredible record of five consecutive wins from six attempts.
Their short programme saw them in second place. A stronger long programme was the top score and took them up to first place and the Gold medal. The sixth consecutive title is unprecedented and cements the pair’s position among the Canadian greats.
Meagan has been vegan since 2008 after she read the book ‘Skinny Bitch’ and immediately threw out all animal products.
As she continues with her final season, she has one eye clearly on the 2018 Winter Olympics. “Right now there is so much depth,” Meagan told Nigma TV. “We have three spots at the Olympics and we have four teams that are absolutely worthy of being top eight at the Olympics. And one of those teams is going to have to sit at home. I mean, that’s a terrible feeling. I was a team that sat at home in 2010 and you don’t want anybody to live through that. That just shows the depth of pairs skating in our country, and I think that’s incredible.”
The good news is that Meagan clearly sees herself as a contender for the Gold which would be the icing on the vegan cake in terms of her successful career. This may have seemed unlikely given that last season that has seen her skating partner Eric suffer a herniated disc and some disappointing results
"I didn't dare to think or say out loud that I wanted to win an Olympic gold medal," she is quoted as saying. "I thought 'Well, we're not even in that position anymore. We're not even in that fight or conversation anymore.' Over the last few weeks, I've been able to say out loud that yes, I do, I want to be an Olympic gold medallist."
