Gut reaction can’t stop vegan biker
Vegan mountainbiker Frans Claes took on the incredibly tough Imbuko Big Five MTB Challenge in South Africa – and faced more than he expected. The South African one-day event sees riders facing a 75 km course with five peaks totally over 3000 metres of height gain.

Unfortunately Frans picked up a bacterial infection and the week leading up to the race – and the day itself – was affected.
“Maybe I picked up a bacteria somewhere” said Frans. “I felt a bit empty, but I wanted to ride the race anyway.”
Incredibly Frans finished sixth in 3 hours 48 mins 36 seconds. He was 3 minutes behind the winning rider and one of just seven riders finishing in under 4hours 15.
He’s already looking forward to the next race, the Cape Epic, which is a five-day UCI road race: the Tour of Good Hope from 2 to 6 March.
