Fiona Oakes

Marathon des Sables is known as the toughest footrace on earth. When is starts on April 5th 2012 vegan marathon champion Fiona Oakes will be attempting to be the first known vegan woman to complete the course.

The 243 km (151 mile) event is across the Sahara desert over sand dunes and rocky uneven ground. Competitors have to carry all their equipment apart from a tent including food, clothes and medical kits.

Fiona’s training has included 30 mile runs with upwards of 11kg in a rucksack, although this is incredible given her other responsibilities. She is the main carer for 400 animals on her sanctuary and generally works from 5am until after dark. She fits the training in during a mid day ‘break’.

Fiona has always been clear that her incredible motivation is to prove the value of a vegan diet and to encourage people to stop using them for food. “I so desperately want to do the animals proud, it simply is not an option for me to do otherwise.”
