Vegan Speed Queen Takes Season’s Title at World Tour
The lifelong vegetarian and multiple world champion takes the overall World Tour win.
Speed skater Kristen Santos-Griswold has taken another win on the World Tour as the season ends in Italy.
The US-based skater won all races from the heat through to the final to walk away with the Gold medal.
The win confirmed Kristen as the winner of the Crystal Globe – the overall women’s winner. The award takes into account placings in all World Tour races from 500 m to 1500 metres for the season. Kristen was the only woman to score more than 240 at a single World Tour event, scoring 260 in Korea and 280 in Italy. She was awarded 1120 points, winning by 170.
Kristen adds the success to Gold at the World Championships and World Cup. In winning finals over 1000 metres and 1500 metres she became one of only two US short track skaters to win Gold at all three individual distances in the history of the World Cup.

Kristen has been vegetarian since birth and never ate meat. In 2018 she made the change to vegan.
“I began questioning how I felt about the dairy and egg industry morally” she told Great Vegan Athletes. “I’ve always loved animals so much and don’t want to contribute to anything that could be harmful to them.
“When I switched to a fully plant-based diet, I also began feeling just overall so much better and began skating better too.”
