PlantBuilt powerlifters delivered standout performances at the US Ultra Nationals, bringing home category wins, state records, and personal bests across multiple divisions. The team’s performances once again highlighted the depth of vegan strength sport.

Daniel “Vegan Meathead” Austin

Daniel Austin secured victory in his Masters category with one of the strongest meets of his career. He hit personal bests in both the squat and his competition total:

  • Squat: 227.5 kg (501 lb)
  • Total: 607 kg (1338 lb)

These numbers are exceptional for the M1 82.5 kg division — and Daniel also broke his own Virginia state records in both the squat and deadlift.

Daniel reflected on the major breakthrough in his squat, which has climbed by 21 kg (46 lb) over the past 18 months. Years of squatting three times per week had led to persistent hip and groin pain, limiting his progress. A strategic shift changed everything.

“My coach had me start squatting only once a week, and it fixed my pain as my squat jumped massively. I guess I was just overdoing the volume for years, and it was holding me back.”

The adjustment has given him a decisive edge.

“Among Masters Men, this seems to be a huge advantage for me now, allowing me to get way ahead early.”

That advantage was clear at Ultra Nationals. Even after waiving his third deadlift attempt due to back pain, he still won by more than 50 pounds, thanks to the commanding lead built through his squat and bench.

Vincent Crapello

Although Vincent Crapello was modest about his performance, the results tell a different story. Competing in the 75 kg Submasters, he secured:

  • Two Pennsylvania state records
  • A national record attempt
  • 2nd place nationally in his division

“It was a lesson in perseverance and drive” Vincent says. “After failing a bench I should have had, I was rattled. Getting two red lights on my deadlift rattled me further. But going back in to make sure I still took home yet another state record and solidifying my spot for the silver medal was enough to give me the drive to work on my numbers and keep driving toward new bigger goals.”

The podium finish underscores the level of lifter Crapello has become — consistent, competitive, and steadily climbing the ranks.

Brittany Billings Takes Gold and Breaks Records

Brittany Billings delivered another powerful showing for PlantBuilt, winning the women’s 82.5 kg Submasters and placing third in the 82.5 kg Open.

Her performance included two state records:

  • Bench Press: 90 kg (198 lb)
  • Deadlift: 200 kg (441 lb)

Brittany’s 200 kg pull was one of the biggest lifts of the meet and a defining moment in her competition.

A Strong Showing for Vegan Strength

From personal bests to state records and national podiums, PlantBuilt athletes once again demonstrated that elite performance and a vegan lifestyle go hand in hand. Their results at the US Ultra Nationals add to a growing body of evidence: plant‑powered athletes are not just competitive — they’re leading from the front.
