Elite Vegan Runners

Rich Roll

Rich is an elite-level amateur ultra-distance endurance athlete who has competed in the toughest events in the world. He adopted a vegan diet when, at age 40, he realised his health and fitness were at very poor levels. He is also an advocate for a plant based diet, which he believes played a large part in his transition from an unhealthy middle-aged man to the top-level athlete he is today. He is a regular ultraman competitior which involves a 10km swim, cycling over 200 miles and running a double marathon.

Ruth Heidrich

Dr Ruth Heidrich is an accomplished distance runner known for notable masters' acheivements. She has been vegan since 1982 when faced with serious ill health, and says the change is resonsible for her return to health and her amazing endurance and fitness.

She undertakes triathlons and has won her age group in national races. Studies on her by the Cooper Sports Clinic have given her age records for her ability.

She has written three books on health and fitness.

Helen Fines

Helen has represented her country as a fell runner. Titles include #2 in the British Fell Running championships (twice), being part of the winning British Long Distance Mountain Running team and winning international bronze in the same event.

She has been vegan since 2009 following her experiences working with animals as a vet.

Catra Corbett

Catra Corbett is a prolific ultramarathon competitor who regularly tackles cross country courses of 100 miles or more. She is known as one of the most colourful characters in ultramarathon running, and has adopted veganism and a positive outlook following earlier years of alcohol abuse. She has a national record for extreme distance running and is planning a first tackling a 733 mile course.

Fiona Oakes

Fiona Oakes is a passionate vegan (since teenage) who runs an animal sanctuary almost singlehandedly. She is also a elite marathon runner with top level finishes at prestigious marathons and a world record. Her personal marathon best is 2:48:00 and she won the largest UK half marathon of 2011 (masses race). She has completed the 2012 Marathon des Sables, a 154 mile event across the sand dunes of the Sahara in extreme heat.

Brendan Brazier

Canadian athlete Brendan Brazier turned vegan and was told that this would restrict his athletic performance. He has since researched food and enabled himslef to compete at national level as well as produce several acclaimed books on nutrition.

He has acheived national titles in triathlon and ultramarathon and has set course records, and published books on nutrition.

Scott Jurek

Scott Jurek has excelled in the demanding world of extreme distance running, winning numerous races, setting course records proving the value of a purely vegan diet. He won the Hardrock 100 mile race 7 consecutive times, set numerous course records and has the American 24 hour distance record.
