Hulda is Great Vegan Athlete of the Year 2017!

Voters have awarded this years’ Great Vegan Athlete of the Year award to powerlifter Hulda B Waage.

28 December 2017

Hulda is a national champion and national record holder is one of the toughest countries – Iceland. The nation’s interest in strength sports has produced numerous legends, and Hulda has become one of them.

This year she broke the national squat record for the 84 kg category with a 205.5 kg squat. She competed for the first time at European level, where a 34 hour journey was not enough to stop her breaking three Icelandic records – taking her squat to 210 kg, beating her own bench record with a 125 kg lift and breaking the record for a competition total.

In November her squat record extended to 212.5 kg and her bench record reached 132.5 kg, and she broke her own competition total of 515 kg by 7.5 kg. Her Wilks score (which enables lifters of different weights to be compared) was the highest women’s score and only beaten by three men.

Hulda was pleased to get the win.

I'm really honored and surprised. I worked hard this year but I also feel this is just the beginning. It's always great to get a pat on the back.

The 33 year old has been vegan for three years after experimenting with it in her teens.

"I think more and more people are waking up and there will be a vegan explosion, bigger than 2017. There has been a lot of activism going on and I hope that movement will grow 2018. Hopefully the world is changing faster for the animals and the environment. I'm really optimistic about this."

Great Vegan Athletes would like to congratulate Hulda on her title and wish her well for upcoming competition in 2018.

We would also like to congratulate the other finalists Ali Crowdus, Cody Elkins and Julia Trezise-Conroy on their successes during 2017.
